At the Museum of Antiquities “JJ Winckelmann”, Sunday 29 December 2024 is Sunday 5 January 2025 at 11 am, guided tours of the exhibition are scheduled “The Myth of the Ambisontes. Mercenaries of Rome in the Isonzo Valley”.
By the curator Marzia Vidulli Torlo, these guided tours take place during the Christmas holidays and are free to enter, with no need to book.
The exhibition presents surprising material from two necropolises in the upper Isonzo basin, granted for display by the Natural History Museum Vienna. This allows us to reconstruct the customs of an indigenous people at the time of the appearance of the Romans.

In the 1st century BC, with the founding of Aquileia, Caesar and Augustus brought the borders of Italy up to the Alps. The indigenous population joined the Roman army, but kept their traditions alive. But this population was the tribe of the Ambiences? Or is this just a fascinating myth?
On display you can admire:
- Weapons: bronze and iron helmets, swords and shields.
- Personal ornaments: brooches, pins and collars.
- Tableware: for the table and the wine.
- Agricultural and craft tools in iron, considered unique in the burial goods of the Iron Age.
The exhibition will be open until 9 March 2025.
