La Spezia: “LIMES: Discovering the Fortifications and Castles of Liguria and Tuscany” presented, a project for the enhancement and promotion of the territory

La Spezia, 11 January 2024 – This morning, at the Palazzo Civico in La Spezia, “LIMES – Project for the enhancement and promotion of archaeological sites, castles, forts and historic fortifications between the Ligurian Riviera and Upper Tuscany” was presented, led by the Municipality of La Spezia, financed by the Ministry of Tourism with resources from FUNT – National Single Fund for Tourism with a contribution of €203.130,00.

During the press conference, the Mayor of La Spezia Pierluigi Peracchini, the Mayor of Massa Francesco Persiani, the Mayor of Fivizzano Gian Luigi Giannetti representing the Union of Municipalities of Lunigiana, the Councilor for Tourism of the Municipality of La Spezia Maria Grazia Frijia and Fabio Boccardi, co-creator of the project, illustrated the details of the initiative.

The “LIMES” project is part of the initiatives of ALA “Area Vasta Ligure Apuana”, conceived by the Municipality of La Spezia and involving 66 municipalities between Liguria and Tuscany. The goal is to enhance an area rich in natural and cultural resources. The project promotes cooperation between the municipalities of the province of La Spezia, Lunigiana, Garfagnana and the municipalities of Massa, Carrara and Montignoso, areas historically linked by cultural exchanges and communication routes between the sea and the mountains. The mission is to strengthen the tourist attractiveness of the area, creating an integrated destination that enhances the diversity of the territory, from seascapes to mountains and historic villages.

One of the most precious riches of the territory embraced by ALA are the fortifications and castles, which represent a heritage of inestimable cultural and tourist value. In recent years, the Municipality of La Spezia has developed interventions for the recovery and tourist enhancement of sites such as the Parco delle Mura, the Galleria ex Rifugio Antiaria “Quintino Sella”, the Parco della Rimembranza, the fortifications of the former Convent of the Poor Clares, the Batteria Valdilocchi and the Castello San Giorgio. This historical-cultural route has been very successful among tourists and visitors, becoming one of the most visited attractions in the city.

La Spezia has made its experience in the sector available and, together with other institutions, has created the LIMES project, which has obtained funding from the Ministry of Tourism. Today, the project officially enters its operational phase.

"We are thrilled to announce the start of the operational phase of the LIMES project, an initiative that represents an important opportunity to enhance our historical and cultural heritage. – declared theTourism Councilor Maria Grazia Frijia – Thanks to the collaboration between the municipalities involved and the support of the Ministry of Tourism, we aim to create an integrated tourist destination that highlights the extraordinary diversity of our territory, from seascapes to mountains, historic villages, historic walls and the wonderful castles and fortifications that exist in this vast area. This project will not only strengthen the tourist attractiveness of our territory since it is not tied to a particular period of the year but can be enjoyed at any time, favoring a deseasonalization, but will also help promote sustainable and inclusive development."

"The LIMES project represents an extraordinary opportunity for our city of Massa, whose historical heritage, such as the Malaspina Castle and the ancient roads that cross the territory, integrates perfectly into a cultural network that embraces Tuscany and Liguria. – declares the Mayor of Massa Francesco Persiani – It is a concrete demonstration of how the past can become the engine for a sustainable and innovative future, strengthening the tourist and cultural attractiveness of our community."

"We immediately worked on the establishment of ALA for a broader vision of tourism that could allow our territories to present a unique tourist offer in the world - declares the President of the Lunigiana Union of Municipalities Gianluigi Giannetti – the Limes project is the first of a long series of investments that will enhance the entire area. Today the theme is the extraordinary historical/cultural heritage that exists, for Lunigiana with its many castles it is a unique opportunity, which we seize by fully integrating into this new vision of widespread tourism, with a precise and concrete unitary strategy".

La Spezia: presentato "LIMES: Alla Scoperta delle Fortificazioni e dei Castelli della Liguria e Toscana", progetto di valorizzazione e promozione del territorio

The “LIMES” project aims to enhance and make accessible the historical and archaeological heritage in the “Vast Area between Liguria and Tuscany”, a territory in which there are numerous archaeological sites of national importance, forts, castles, military fortifications and historical routes, signs of a powerful work of civilisation and control of the territory unique in Europe. A strategic territory in the history of Italy where the signs of a powerful militarization work are evident. The project connects the two defensive systems built in different eras: the forts and castles built from the 1800th to the XNUMXth century throughout the territory and the fortifications to defend the gulf built from XNUMX but intensified during the Second World War. The network of historical routes that cross it is dense: Via Francigena, Via degli abati, Via Marchesana, Via del Volto Santo, Via Cassia, Via Aurelia, Via Aemilia Scauri, Via Iulia Augusta, Route Napoleon to name the main ones. The project aims to create a “circuit of excellence” that can develop and increase cultural and tourist attractiveness.

The aim is to create a network of sites of historical and archaeological interest to promote, through their attractiveness and the presence of historic connecting roads, the whole of the landscape, cultural and food and wine resources of the area. Using new technologies, these resources will be structured into a unique and integrated tourist offer, improving the material and immaterial accessibility of the cultural and historical-archaeological heritage in the areas of intervention. The project aims to promote the opportunities that the territory offers in terms of culture, environment, nature, typical products, traditions, sports specificities and well-being.

Thanks to Google Earth, it is possible to virtually explore the castles and fortifications of the territory, living an immersive digital experience. Illustrations with a contemporary graphic style reinterpret our past, making the historical heritage immediately recognizable and memorable. This dual digital and artistic soul allows us to tell a unique story, which combines innovation and tradition.

From the analysis of tourism trends for 2025, it emerges that experiential tourism will continue to be one of the most important trends in the travel industry. Travelers are no longer just looking for destinations to visit, but prefer to live authentic and engaging experiences that enrich their adventure. Added to this trend is the influence of social media: over 97% of people share photos and videos of their travels, creating an influential network of content, real storytelling that describes day-to-day experiences and sensations.

All digital information will be contained in a website designed primarily for the mobile browsing experience: optimized for smartphones, with responsive design and fast loading, user-friendly interface, clean layout, simple navigation and clear content. Interactive and dynamic maps will be developed that will allow you to explore destinations, plan routes and view attractions with custom filters. High-quality multimedia content, such as photographs and emotional storytelling, will tell experiences through engaging images and narratives. The site will be designed to be accessible to users with disabilities, with readable text, audio descriptions, and screen reader-compatible features.
