SS 729 Sassari-Olbia inaugurated: works completed on the strategic route in Sardinia
The SS 729 Sassari-Olbia route is finally completed and entirely passable. With the opening of the bridge over the Rio Mannu (4th lot), inaugurated in the presence of the authorities, the new 80,6 km artery connects two important hubs of Sardinia, improving safety and connectivity. Also coming is the Smart Road, an innovative technological infrastructure that will make the Sassari-Olbia one of the first intelligent roads in Italy.
Yesterday morning, the Councillor for Public Works Antonio Piu, with the Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Alessandro Morelli, with responsibility for public investment planning, the Managing Director and General Manager of Anas Aldo Isi, participated in the inauguration ceremony of the SS 729 “Sassari-Olbia” route. With the simultaneous opening to traffic of the bridge over the Rio Mannu (4th lot), the last work of the overall intervention, from today the entire artery that connects Sassari with Olbia in both directions is completely passable. The set of works, begun in 2012 and divided into 10 lots, from Lot 0 to Lot 9, includes some additional interventions on the infrastructure itself and on the adjacent road system. “It's a day to mark on your calendar – comments councilor Piu – We have delivered with satisfaction a fundamental work that connects two important cities and connects the territories that include the hubs of Sassari - Porto Torres - Alghero and Olbia, in which important production, industrial, commercial and tourist settlements of absolute importance in the economic system of Sardinia are concentrated together with two airports and two ports“. The work started with an initial amount of 935 million euros, reduced to 875 following reprogramming in 2018 and extends over a total length of 80,6 km. The interventions were necessary because in the past the infrastructure proved inadequate with respect to the transit flows, recording critical issues related to traffic safety, with frequent and serious accidents.
"In addition to the road works, the construction of the first Smart Road, one of the first in Italy, along the Sassari-Olbia route is also underway. – explains Piu – a complex and strategically relevant infrastructural intervention, currently in the planning phase, which after its completion will represent, from the point of view of the section and the route, of safety and of the level of service, the flagship itinerary of the road network of Sardinia. This will allow to develop a system that represents a jewel in the crown in terms of reliability of the entire route. It will be a real road that communicates with the user who travels along it through a system of interaction and connectivity. A concrete response to the serious accidents that have occurred in the past due to the many critical issues that this route has represented“. Funded in March 2022 through a share of the available savings, with 30,5 million, the works for the Smart Road include the construction of a basic infrastructure (consisting of cable ducts and plinths) and a high-performance fiber optic electricity and data transmission network infrastructure, the installation of multifunctional stations hosting connectivity and traffic surveillance and control technologies. The technological infrastructure is divided into three modules, each of about 30 km, at the center of which is the green island where the technological rooms and systems will be located.
"Today is an important day that is the result of a synergic work made up of meetings that we frequently hold in the territory – underlines the CEO of Anas – where there is a daily relationship with the men, women, technicians of ANAS who live in the territory, but also the result of frequent meetings on the future planning of investments that see us as protagonists of these non-stop sessions in Rome in which with the councilor Piu we verify the progress of the work in progress, but also the progress of the authorization process of the works and therefore the future planning“. The ceremony was also attended by the mayors of the municipalities of Oschiri, Roberto Carta, and the mayor of Berchidda, Andrea Nieddu, where the 10 kilometers of the bridge over the Rio Mannu stand, the last work delivered today consisting of three bridges, for a total value of 105 million.
