Rovigo: training course for prison volunteers begins.

A new project will start on February 27th training course for prison volunteers, presented today at Nodari Palace.

The Importance of Volunteering in Prison

“The importance of having volunteers inside the prison is extremely great”, declared the Councillor for Social Policies Nadia Bala. "Institutions often struggle to ensure complete support, so volunteering is essential. We believe in collaborating with all the subjects and associations that revolve around this world, to create a support network that can guarantee the foundations and also think about a training path for after prison".

The organizers and the objectives of the course

The course is promoted by Prison chaplaincy in collaboration with the Coordination of volunteers at the Rovigo prison, Caritas and with the patronage of Municipality of Rovigo.

Emanuel Gasparetto, among the organizers, explained that the course was designed to collect the sensitivities present in the territory and to train volunteers who can operate both inside of and outside the prison. “The period following detention is very difficult, especially for those who have no family, job or support”, he added, thanking the historical volunteers, including Innocent Lorenzetto, and hoping for a great participation.

The chaplain Brother Mark stressed the need for listening and human closeness, highlighting how fundamental it is both material support, to restore dignity to prisoners, and spiritual support.

Testimony of a volunteer

Among those present also Sabrina Cabassi, Gasparetto's wife, who told her experience in the world of volunteering: “I have always supported my husband, but I never wanted to get personally involved because I had my own idea of prison and inmates. One day I found myself at a meeting and among the inmates there was a boy the age of my son. From there I began to look at them with a different gaze and for 10 years I have been doing volunteer service”.
