"Your son ran over a pregnant woman, now he is under arrest at the barracks", this is how a 30-year-old Neapolitan tried to defraud an elderly woman by pretending to be a Carabinieri Marshal. Leveraging an alleged crime committed by his son, the man asked the elderly woman to pay 10.000 euros.

Rome: Tries to Scam an Elderly Woman by Pretending to Be a Marshal, 30-Year-Old Neapolitan Arrested

Yet another scam against fragile and vulnerable victims with the classic script. The protagonist, this time, a 79-year-old woman who received a call on her landline from a self-styled marshal with a strong Neapolitan accent, who told her that her son was in trouble for having run over a woman on a pedestrian crossing and that, to exonerate him, it would be necessary to pay a large sum of money – specifically 10.000 euros – as reimbursement for a surgical operation that the phantom woman who was hit was supposed to undergo following the trauma.

The impostor's ruse also included a third character, an imaginary nephew of the lawyer appointed by the son, who was supposed to act as an intermediary for the delivery of the sum requested for the release.

When asked to collect all the cash he had at home, to overcome the initial distrust of the woman who claimed she had none, the scammer responded with a "trap" by claiming that he had already had contact with her husband and that the latter had revealed to him that he kept the money at home behind a piece of furniture.

A reconstruction, however, that made the old lady suspicious. So, the woman, with the excuse of recovering the money, remaining in constant telephone contact with the man - who in the meantime prevented her from ending the call until he had been aware of the money collected - went down to ask for help from the doorman of the building who, immediately, contacted 112 (NUE) to report what was happening.

When the scammer, in the “role” of the lawyer's nephew, went to visit the victim, the police officers of the 2nd State Police District Salario Parioli were there to welcome him and ready to arrest him.
