It's time to take stock and, like every year, the Highway Police, a specialty of the State Police, takes stock of the activities carried out in 2024.
In the past year, the Traffic Police employed 420.563 patrols to control roads and highways (+01% compared to 2023), checking 1.973.173 people (the previous year there were 1.870.130) and contesting 1.688.862 violations (0,7% more than in 2023). The violations ascertained for speeding were 465.021. 38.283 driving licenses were withdrawn (2023 in 35.992) and 45.070 registration certificates (43.701 in 2023). Finally, 2.856.720 license points were deducted.
Drivers checked with breathalyzers and precursors were 760.337 (+23% compared to 2023), of which 13.310 were fined for driving under the influence of alcohol while those reported for driving under the influence of narcotics were 1.191. The vehicles seized for confiscation were 846.
On the 176 motorway sections – equal to 1.670 km – the Highway Police monitors the average speed through the “Tutor” and, from 1 January to 22 December, it detected 315.909 violations for exceeding the speed limit.
Checks continued in the professional transport sector, involving 10.209 operators, including police officers and employees of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, who checked 19.108 heavy vehicles, ascertaining 14.699 infringements and withdrawing 243 driving licences and 448 registration documents.
The judicial police activity was also particularly effective, allowing a total of 16.410 people to be brought to justice, of which 747 were arrested and 15.663 reported while at liberty. Over 1.800 kg of narcotic substances seized. The public establishments checked were 4.551 of which 1.467 auto repair shops, 1.092 car dealerships, 584 driving schools, 433 body shops, 433 car registration agencies, 99 car demolitions and 443 other establishments. 2.347 infringements were detected of which 2.127 for which an administrative sanction is foreseen and 220 of criminal relevance.
On 14 December 2024, the provisions of Law No. 177 of 25 November 2024 came into force, which introduced multiple amendments to the Highway Code and other regulations, as part of a general revision project that also includes the implementation of a broad legislative delegation to increase road safety.
The new law affected several articles of the code in different areas: infrastructure, signs, vehicles, driving conditions, rules of conduct, road education. The blood alcohol levels for drunk driving were not changed and the novelty of the alcohol lock was introduced.
The regulatory changes are aimed at increasing road safety by intervening transversally on the different areas that characterize traffic with particular attention also to the risky behaviors implemented by road users in order to safeguard the safety and life of each individual.
The first data collected by the Highway Police and the Carabinieri show a downward trend in accidents and victims.
