The new trees are added to the 100 plants already planted as part of the forestation project proposed by the FAO in Rome Capitale with which the World Library of Trees and Flowers was created. The project was carried out in an area of approximately 2,5 hectares adjacent to the Garden of the Righteous identified with the contacts for the Capitoline Superintendence, State Superintendence and Historic Villas Offices of Rome Capitale inside Villa Pamphilj, where the different species botanical images of trees, shrubs and flowers to promote biodiversity have been placed in seven circles, representing the geographical areas of the planet in which FAO is involved: Africa, Asia, Europe, the Near East, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, the Pacific .
The project was curated by landscape architects from the OSA studio, in collaboration with the team of the Festival del Verde e del Paesaggio, who donated it to Roma Capitale. The plants were identified by the designers in synergy with the Historic Trees and Villas offices of the Capitoline Department of Environmental Protection and the Forestry Department of the FAO and donated by Assofloro Coldiretti. The Capitoline Environmental Protection Department has carried out the planting of the plants and will take care of their maintenance and care.
The project has a strong educational and didactic vocation, highlighting the fundamental function of plants and their positive impact on collective health and was also conceived to symbolically represent the closeness and common commitment for the good of the Planet between all the countries of the world .
All plants have a QR Code that refers to the FAO portal https://www.fao.org/fao-italy/projects/park with the explanation of the project and a mobile APP has been set up that guides people inside the arboretum. FAO also donated modular benches positioned within the various areas of the project.
"Thanks to FAO we have created a World Library of trees, flowers and biodiversity. There are already around 160 trees from 7 areas of the world, all tree varieties that can also be known and studied with the help of ad hoc QRcodes. The wonderful setting of this segment of Villa Pamphilj is the ideal place for this type of initiative. I thank the FAO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Coldiretti, who are fundamental partners in pursuing our urban reforestation program, as in this unique and special place, which we hope can become a destination for everyone, not only to enjoy the Villa but to get to know , recognize and appreciate our trees." commented the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri.
"With the new 80 trees we nourish this beautiful project which is part of the administration's actions to promote biodiversity and contribute to the measures that Rome has adopted in the Climate Adaptation Plan. The World Tree Library also has a strong educational value and aims to speak above all to young generations about sustainability and the urgency of a collective commitment at a global level for the protection of ecosystems, starting from urban ones". declared Councilor Sabrina Alfonsi.
