Rome: grandmother "kidnapped" from the Dome loses her bearings and falls into the arms of the police officers of the Borgo Police Station
Roman holidays with a happy ending for Carmela, a 93-year-old Neapolitan grandmother who the other morning, after leaving the hotel where she was staying to take a walk on the historic cobblestones of the eternal city, was unable to find her way back “home”. The agents of the Borgo Police Station found her when, while they were engaged in a patrol service along the Vatican walls, they spotted the elderly lady sitting alone at a restaurant table with her gaze lost in space.
When they carefully sat down next to her to ask her what she was doing, they could see in her eyes the desperation and despair she was in. Only after a few minutes, wrapped in the warmth of their attention, Carmela managed to overcome her embarrassment and tell the police what had happened.
Just a few hours earlier, eager to visit the capital, she had silently left the hotel where she was staying with her daughter and son-in-law to admire the dome in the early morning. Enraptured by the views of St. Peter's, she had lost her sense of direction. She had felt completely lost when she realized she didn't have her cell phone with her and couldn't remember her daughter's number by heart. So, abandoned to despair, she had sat down in a restaurant trying to regain her calm.
After listening to her story, the police officers asked her to stand up and, taking her by the arm, tried with her to reconstruct the route she had taken during her solo trip. Seeing her distraught and cold, they then chose to accompany her to the police station at Largo del Colonnato so she could recover. There, the “solidarity machine” was activated. A few cross-checks with the Police Headquarters Operations Room were enough to trace the daughter's telephone number.
Shortly after, Carmela was in his arms. Maria, when her phone rang, was running to the nearest police station to report her mother's disappearance. When she heard from the voice of the police officers that Carmela was safe, she burst into tears of happiness.
