Rome: Casamonica treasure worth over 3 million euros definitively confiscated
The staff of the Anti-Crime Division of the Rome Police Headquarters carried out a measure this morning confiscation, issued by the Court of Rome – Prevention Measures Section – became final on January 28, 2025, following the ruling of the Fifth Section of the Supreme Court of Cassation, of real estate, movable property of significant value, including silverware, jewelry and a motor vehicle, as well as Financial resources, for a total value of over 3 million euros, towards Giuseppe Casamonica (born in 1950) and of the son Guerrino (born 1970), known as Pelè.
Today's activity is the conclusion of an important Judicial Police operation and testifies to the extraordinary joint action of the Capitoline Prosecutor's Office and the Rome Police Headquarters aimed at fighting organized crime, attacking illicitly accumulated assets to be returned to the community in a path of legality.
Il 16 June 2020 had been carried out seizure of assets ordered by the Court, Preventive Measures Section, on the joint proposal of the Public Prosecutor of Rome and the Police Chief of Rome in conjunction with the execution of the arrest warrants for 20 members of the mafia association called “Casamonica clan” belonging to Giuseppe Casamonica and Ferruccio Casamonica, all strongly suspected of organised and widespread usurious activities and the abusive exercise of credit, with consequent extortionate conduct as well as fictitious ownership of assets.
At the end of the preventive procedure, which took place through numerous hearings, the Court – Rome MP Section – confirming what was established with the precautionary measure, the8th November 2021 had the decree of confiscation of assets has been issued.
At the same time, on a subjective level, the actuality of the generic and qualified dangerousness of the proposed ones had been proven, with the application of the personal measure of special surveillance by the State Police with the obligation to stay in the municipality of residence, for a duration of 3 years.
Following an appeal against the decision of the first instance judge by the defendants and some third parties, with decree, dated 8 March 2024, Court of Appeal of Rome – Criminal Section IV has all appeals rejected, fully confirming the confiscation decree of the MP Court issued on 8 November 2021 as well as the application of personal measures.
Against the decision of the Court of Appeal, the aforementioned parties have filed the appeal to the Supreme Court. With judgment issued on January 28, 2025, the Fifth Criminal Section of the Supreme Court of Cassation has the appeals of Giuseppe Casamonica and Guerrino Casamonica declared inadmissible, condemning them not only to pay the legal costs but also to payment of the sum of 3.000 euros in favor of the fines fund.
I assets attributable to the proposed ones which will definitively enter the State's assets are:
- 4 real estate units, including the sumptuous villa located in this Via Roccabernarda 8, entrusted for use during the procedure to the Public Company for Personal Services “Asilo Savoia” and that of Via Flavia Demetria 90, the historic residence of the clan, entrusted to the Pangea Onlus Foundation. The villa located in Monterosi (VT) was assigned for social purposes to that Municipal Administration. The confiscation of the properties has been extended to all the furniture, silverware, household appliances and other goods present inside them., of significant economic value.
