Thanks to the activity of the Polmetro core, 14 professional pickpockets were arrested between the lines A and B of the metropolitan service, caught in the act or stopped immediately after the theft.

The pickpockets' technique

Investigators have reconstructed a proven pattern of action, based on a technique as ancient as it is effective. The perpetrators of the thefts acted in in pairs or small groups, with well-defined roles:

  • one was acting as stick, distracting the victims or covering their movements,
  • the accomplice acted with dexterity in opening the bag or backpack,
  • finally, with a quick and almost imperceptible gesture, he was taking away wallets and valuables.

The ideal context was rush hour, amidst the crowds and chaos of central bus stops, when tourists and commuters became vulnerable targets.

The case at Eur Magliana

The most striking episode occurred at the Eur Magliana station, along the B line. Two men, after exchanging quick nods of understanding, put into action the tried and tested technique, targeting an elderly passenger.

The police officers, who were monitoring the scene thanks to the surveillance cameras, intervened immediately after the robbery began, stopping the pickpockets. Despite the attempt by one of the accomplices to get rid of the stolen goods by throwing his wallet on the tracks, the stolen goods were recovered and returned to the owner. Both men were arrested for aggravated theft in competition.

Other interventions and arrests

This was not an isolated incident. At the bus stop Colosseum, still on line B, the officers noticed a forty-year-old of Romanian origin who was insistently moving from one train to another, seeking suspicious contact with travellers.

After several failed attempts, the man was subjected to a check and identified: a criminal charge was pending against him. prison order for similar thefts.

In other cases, pickpockets were unmasked by internal cameras and intercepted before they could escape. The combined action of plainclothes patrols and video surveillance systems allowed for real-time intervention, bringing the criminals to justice.

The activity of the Polmetro unit of theGeneral Prevention and Public Relief Office, carried out in synergy with the staff of theAttack, aims to ensure the daily safety of commuters and tourists.

The system involves a widespread presence of officers in both uniform and plainclothes, supported by video surveillance technologies, with the aim of significantly reducing thefts in the most crowded areas of the metropolitan network.

A widespread phenomenon but under observation

Rome, an international tourist destination, has been a privileged theater for pickpockets, which take advantage of the large influx of travellers. However, the latest operations demonstrate that the investigative pressure is high and that daily checks are producing concrete results.

The 14 arrests carried out in a few days confirm that the fight against pickpocketing remains a priority for urban security, with the aim of make the metro a safer environment for all citizens.
