Rome, major raid against organized crime: 14 arrests for attempted murder, mafia extortion, and weapons.

ROMA At dawn today, a large-scale anti-mafia operation was launched, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office and conducted by the Carabinieri of the Rome Provincial Command, with the support of special units of the force. The raid resulted in the execution of a pre-trial detention order against 14 individuals, deemed to be seriously suspected—to varying degrees—of a series of crimes related to the activities of organized crime in Rome and Campania.

The order, signed by the preliminary investigations judge of the Rome Court, concerns individuals charged with attempted murder, illegal possession and carrying of firearms, extortion aggravated by mafia methods, attempted kidnapping, and—in some circumstances—the further aggravating circumstance of having acted to facilitate the "Senese" mafia clan, one of the most deeply rooted and influential criminal organizations in the capital's criminal landscape.

A broad and detailed investigation

The restrictive measure is the result of a complex investigative effort initiated by the Carabinieri Investigative Unit in Rome and conducted under the constant coordination of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate. The investigations have uncovered an alarming picture of violence, illicit trafficking, and intimidation attributable, directly or indirectly, to organized criminal groups.

In particular, the investigators have collected serious circumstantial evidence relating to:

  • Two attempted murders occurred in Rome, incidents which, according to investigators, are part of dynamics within or related to local organized crime.
  • Drug dealing activity, with an illicit economic flow managed by key figures with ties to mafia circles.
  • An extortion attempt against a jeweler in the capital, a complex affair: a Roman criminal allegedly attempted to impose his extortionate pressure by claiming to be a member of the Senese clan. This claim attracted the attention and reaction not only of the Roman gang, but also of the Di Lauro clan, a powerful Camorra organization active in the province of Naples.
The false attribution would have triggered an escalation of tensions between the two mafia groups, culminating in the demand for a sort of "compensation" for the misappropriation of the name and criminal prestige of the Senese family.
  • An attempted kidnapping, also aggravated by mafia methods, aimed at exercising violent control over the territory and the economic activities involved.

Searches and developments

Concurrently with the execution of the precautionary measures, the Carabinieri are carrying out numerous searches of homes, warehouses, and premises linked to the suspects, seeking further evidence, weapons, documents, and materials useful for further investigations.

Today's operation represents a further blow to Rome's organized crime, confirming the judiciary and law enforcement's constant vigilance against mafia networks attempting to infiltrate the city's economic and social fabric.

Investigations are still ongoing and further developments cannot be ruled out.
