Rome, 23-year-old student raped by three North Africans outside the Jonio metro station.

A 23-year-old student experienced a night of unspeakable violence, attacked and raped by three men outside the Jonio station on the B1 line of the Rome Metro, in the northeast corner of the city, between Val Melaina and Tufello. The shocked young woman filed a complaint, and the Carabinieri are now investigating to reconstruct the exact details of the attack and identify those responsible.

The attack occurred after midnight: "Two men held me down, and the third raped me."

According to the victim's report, the assault occurred on the night between Saturday, December 7th and Sunday, December 8th, just after midnight. The woman had just exited the Jonio metro station when, a few meters away, she was surrounded by three men.

According to his story, two attackers allegedly immobilized her, holding her arms and movements, while a third allegedly raped her directly on the street, in a dimly lit spot near the subway entrance. A swift and brutal attack.

Immediately after, the three men reportedly fled, disappearing into the darkness and disappearing without a trace.

The rush to the hospital and the complaint

Shocked and injured, the 23-year-old found the strength to reach the emergency room of the Sandro Pertini hospital on her own. It was the medical staff, around 3 in the morning, who raised the alarm with the police, after the young woman recounted what had happened and filed a complaint.

Doctors immediately activated the sexual assault protocol, providing clinical and psychological assistance.

Prosecutor's Office investigation: video surveillance footage acquired

The Rome Public Prosecutor's Office immediately opened a file for aggravated sexual assault, entrusting the investigation to the Carabinieri of the Montesacro company and the Investigative Unit.

Investigators are combing through:

  • le subway cameras;
  • systems of road video surveillance of the area;
  • the girl's movements in the minutes preceding the attack.

The goal is to reconstruct the young woman's route, verify any possible tailing, and, above all, identify the escape route of the three attackers.

The young woman reportedly described the three men as North African citizens, but she was unable to provide details on her age or precise physical characteristics, due to the shock and speed of the attack.

Few clues, many questions: were they on the subway too?

At the moment several questions remain open:

  • Did the attackers get on the subway with the girl?
  • did they follow her as soon as she left the station?
  • or were they already near the bus stop, waiting for a vulnerable victim?

The cameras could provide crucial answers, but at the moment – investigative sources report – there are no certainties.

Pack hunting

The investigation is proceeding unabated. A thorough search has been launched in the area around the Jonio station and nearby neighborhoods, known for being busy areas, even at night. Investigators are cross-referencing witness statements, possible suspicious activity, and reports, while the prosecutor's office is maintaining the utmost secrecy.

The priority is to put a face to the three perpetrators and prevent them from striking again.

An episode that rekindles the issue of security in metropolitan areas

The violence outside a subway station—a place supposedly safe thanks to its cameras, lighting, and pedestrian traffic—has brought the issue of safety in Rome's suburbs back into the spotlight.

Neighborhood committees and residents in the Val Melaina and Tufello areas have long been reporting the presence of poorly lit and isolated areas in the evening hours, factors that can encourage crime.

The city of Rome is faced with a new episode of sexual violence, yet another one targeting a woman in a public, everyday setting.
