Reggio Calabria: Shipwreck in the Ionian Sea, Survivor Arrested for Homicide

The arrested migrant allegedly vented his violence on a 16-year-old Iraqi girl, the daughter of another survivor, until she died from suffocation.

Reggio Calabria: shipwreck in the Ionian Sea, survivor arrested for murder.

The State Police of Reggio Calabria executed an arrest warrant issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Locri against one of the migrants who survived the shipwreck in the Ionian Sea, who landed at the port of Roccella Ionica on June 17; the subject is considered seriously suspected of the crime of murder.

The decree was adopted following the investigation activities conducted jointly by the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad and the Siderno Police Station, with the collaboration of the Naval Operations Section of the Guardia di Finanza of Roccella Ionica.

The investigations, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Locri directed by Dr. Giuseppe Casciaro, have made it possible to reconstruct the dynamics of a murder, which adds to the series of dramatic events connected to the shipwreck of the sailing boat that sank around 120 miles from the Calabrian coast, with around 70 migrants on board.

In fact, as emerged from the elements acquired during the proceedings currently in the preliminary investigation phase, while the sailing boat was already adrift, the arrested migrant would have vented his violence on a 16-year-old Iraqi girl, daughter of a another survivor, leading to her death by suffocation.

After the formal procedures, the arrested person was taken to the Catanzaro prison, at the disposal of the judicial authorities.

The GIP at the Locri Court validated the arrest order, applying the precautionary measure of detention in prison in accordance with the requests of the Locri Prosecutor's Office.
