Pisa: Photo Contest “Pisa and the Giro d'Italia. 100 years of passion” 

There will be time until March 15 next to go and search among the family albums, in the drawers and in the archives and find the photographs of one of the passages in Pisa of the Giro d'Italia.

That is in fact the expiry date for participate in the photo contest "100 years of passion. Pisa and the Giro d'Italia" proposed by the Municipality of Pisa in anticipation of the time trial stage which will be hosted in the city next 20 May on the occasion of 108th edition of the Giro.

In fact, 2025 marks the centenary of the first time Pisa hosted a stage of the Giro, it was the 20 May 1925.

It has happened since then another 6 times; the last one in 1980, also in that case on May 20th.

To find a twin stage to the one that will take place, the Lucca-Pisa time trial, we must go back to 29 May 1977, but in that case the arrival was in Piazza XX Settembre, while in a few weeks it will be in Piazza Duomo. There were many other occasions in which Pisa saw the Giro riders pass by.

«We are very satisfied that a climate of great expectation has been created in the city for the event that we will host, the arrival in Pisa of a stage of the Giro d'Italia, with all that this entails in terms of participation, curiosity, desire to be there. – says the sports councilor Frida Scarpa.

Last week many Pisans wanted to participate in the pink lighting of the Tower and I hope that the same will happen in the coming weeks for the events we are organizing. In the meantime, also to rekindle that right spirit of belonging that only certain sporting events, such as the Giro, can transmit, we wanted to organize a photography competition, which will become an exhibition, with photographic testimonies of the many passages of the Corsa in rosa in our city.

We therefore ask citizens to go and look for old shots, open drawers, family albums, personal archives to share with the whole city the best moments of those days.».

Il photographic contest intends to involve sports enthusiasts, professional and amateur photographers, citizens. Anyone can participate by sending their own shots.

The subject includes the most evocative moments of the many times that Pisa has been a stage city or has hosted even just one passage of the “Corsa Rosa”.

A commission of experts will select the images that best express the theme.

Le 25 selected photographs will be the subject of a photographic exhibition set up in theatrium of Palazzo Gambacorti in the period between, approximately, end of March and the Giro d'Italia stage event.

The selected photographs will then also be submitted to the judgement of the users of the Social channels of the Municipality of Pisa to decree the winning photograph.

Up for grabs an electric bicycle, offered by Pisamo srl, mobility company of the Municipality of Pisa, and bike sharing subscriptions.

There is time to participate until Saturday 15 March 2025. It will be sufficient to send up to a maximum of 10 photographs. Each photo must be accompanied by a title and short caption.

In the case of traditional format photographs, the original must be delivered to thePress office (Gambacorti Palace, Piazza XX Settembre, office hours) for the appropriate transformation into digital format.
