Palermo, an arsenal of weapons and ammunition discovered in the village of Santa Rosalia and a laboratory to modify them in a villa in Ciaculli. The person responsible has been arrested

The Finance Police of the Provincial Command of Palermo, as part of the checks carried out daily in the metropolitan area for the prevention and repression of illicit trafficking, arrested a person in flagrante delicto and seized 14 firearms, over 1.400 bullets, silencers, magazines and material for the processing and modification of weapons of all types.

In particular, the Green Berets of the Pronto Impiego Group, engaged daily in the surveillance service, especially in the most criminally at-risk neighborhoods of the city, always attentive to analyzing and evaluating the information acquired in the context of territorial control activities, had received news of a person capable of finding, assembling or modifying any type of firearm, subsequently making them available to organized and common crime.

In light of the recent incidents of use of weapons in Palermo that also involved very young people in the city's nightlife areas and the resulting social alarm that was created, attention on the man was maximum from the very beginning and, therefore, once identified, he was subjected to tailing for several days in order to trace his movements and especially his acquaintances.

The same person was noticed several times spending time in secluded places with people close to the city's criminal circles and almost always, before or after the meetings, he went to an underground garage in the Villaggio Santa Rosalia neighborhood, a place not directly attributable to him but which he had at his disposal and inside which he sometimes spent a few hours.

In light of what emerged and the reconstructed criminal profile of the subject, with specific precedents in illicit possession of weapons, the Guardia di Finanza carried out two local searches, the first in his residence, a villa surrounded by a large plot of land in Ciaculli, on the outskirts of Palermo, equipped with closed-circuit television cameras on all sides and with particularly valuable furnishings. Here a real laboratory was brought to light with workbenches, machinery and every type of tool necessary to modify and assemble weapons and even to encapsulate bullets. In the laboratory, a semi-automatic pistol in the process of being worked on, cartridges and some pistol and rifle barrels were found. During the second search, carried out in the garage identified by the shadowing services in the “Villaggio Santa Rosalia” neighborhood, a real arsenal of weapons and bullets was discovered hidden in a cavity created in the false ceiling with wooden planks screwed together that covered the entire roof.

Once the wooden planks were removed by the financial police, pistols, bullets, silencers and magazines were found.

Overall, the following were discovered and seized: 14 firearms including revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, 1431 cartridges, cartridge cases and bullets, 8 magazines, 4 silencers, 40 primers, bags of gunpowder as well as a large quantity of gun parts including revolver frames, cylinders, grips, barrels and various materials for the manufacture of cartridges.

This is one of the most important weapons seizures carried out in Palermo in recent years.

The man was then arrested and taken to the Pagliarelli prison, at the disposal of the Judicial Authority which validated both the arrest and the seizure of the weapons and all the material found.

Ballistic tests will establish whether the weapons were used in criminal incidents that occurred in the city over time or were instead kept at the disposal of criminal organizations to commit further crimes.
