Machine gun and ammunition discovered in underground Naples

After not even a week the Underground Naples “gives” other discoveries. We are in the same stretch of road in the Sanità district. The carabinieri return to Vico II San Severo where a few days earlier two large-engined motorcycles and many other stolen vehicle parts had been found. That cave deserves a more thorough inspection. The entrance, covered by a disused refrigerator, is passed once again and the carabinieri, accompanied by a team of specialized firefighters, travel through the various tunnels present in the tuff underground.

Several interconnected environments are inspected and many tunnels wind through the city underground in a path that recalls Hollywood films with Professor Indiana Jones. Here, however, no “action” and no reruns are allowed, you have to be careful where you put your feet. During the operations, the soldiers pass through a narrow and cramped passage that hides another tunnel below. Once through the tunnel, they reach a further difference in level created by a pile of debris. The Carabinieri and firefighters climb a few meters and find another small crack covered by waste and waste materials.

You dig and enter another small area. Lean against the right wall, 2 wooden ladders in perfect condition. New stairs that suggest recent use. On the left side, however, there is a staircase created in the tuff that ends in an iron plate. The metal does not stop the carabinieri who find yet another room. In the center a pile of debris and a thin layer of soil. Under that soil, inside a blanket, the carabinieri found an orange PVC pipe with the ends closed with caps of the same material.

That “case” will not hide ancient treasures or mysteries still unsolved. In that construction tube the carabinieri find – wrapped in a plastic bag – a machine gun type MP 38/40. There is also a box and inside 45 9×19 caliber bullets. The war weapon, perfectly functional, was seized and will be subjected to ballistic tests to verify its possible use in bloody acts or other crimes.
