Naples, the connection between the Poggioreale and Capodichino stations has been completed.
Yesterday morning the TBM boring machine, which carried out the underground excavation, also knocked down the last diaphragm between the two tunnels that make up the route along which the metro trains will travel. The demolition, which effectively marked the completion of the Naples-Capodichino Business Center section, was witnessed by the mayor Gaetano Manfredi and the councilor for Infrastructure and Mobility Edoardo Cosenza.
The project of the two tunnels that connect the Poggioreale and Capodichino stations - each approximately one thousand meters long and with a circular section of 6 meters and 80 centimeters - was drawn up by the Naples Metro, concessionaire for the design and construction of line 1 , and from the Milan Metro. The execution of the works was entrusted by the Naples Metro to the Integra Consortium – Sinergo Spa.
The first tunnel was completed in March 2021. The TBM was then dismantled in Poggioreale and transferred to Capodichino where it was reassembled to proceed with the excavation of the second tunnel. This phase of the intervention, which began in July 2021, suffered a setback due to the instability that occurred in the Poggioreale cemetery on 5 January 2022, when 120 meters of excavation was still missing from completion of the work. The suspension lasted until last December. With the resumption of work and on the basis of in-depth geotechnical investigations, consolidation works were also carried out through injections, aimed at improving the geomechanical characteristics of the land.
"The metro construction site – commented Mayor Manfredi – it's progressing very quickly. We hope that by 2026 the metro will be able to reach Capodichino airport. This work is the result of great institutional collaboration and great work done by qualified companies: an important effort to ensure that Naples increasingly equips itself with a high-level rail transport system, typical of a large city, which is at the service of citizens and many visitors".
"The metro is a construction site of extreme complexity – underlined the councilor Cosenza –. Today is a very important moment because after the breaking of the last diaphragm of the last tunnel connecting to the airport it will be possible to proceed with the other works, connecting the stations of the Management Center and Court which will open in 2024, directly with Capodichino, making the airport even more competitive. To achieve this result there was great collaboration between companies, firefighters and also the judiciary after the serious problem that had blocked the intervention".
"We have reached a great milestone with which we are all very satisfied – said Paolo Carbone, president of the Naples Metro –. We have had a rather complex period and a great institutional collaboration between the Metro and the Municipality will allow us to open the connection of the Tribunali and Centro Direzionale stations, which are almost operational, with Capodichino by June 2026".
