Milano: “The truth in the tracks. Over 120 years of Scientific Police”, exhibition at the National Museum of Science and Technology
The exhibition “The truth in the tracks. Over 120 years of Scientific Police”, scheduled for National Museum of Science and Technology of Milano, from the 13 December 2024 to the 26 January 2025, promoted by the State Police, organized by the Regional Cabinet of the Scientific Police of Lombardy, created thanks to the support of Intesa Sanpaolo and Gruppo San Donato.
The exhibition was born as multimedia journey to offer visitors the opportunity to listen, read, understand and appreciate the activities carried out by the Scientific Police in all their declinations, through the specialist's magnifying glass.
The exhibition itinerary is divided into seven environments, each characterized by a specific color and discipline, and tells the story of the Scientific Police from its origins, which date back to 1903 with the establishment of the first Scientific Police school by the medical examiner Salvatore OttolenghiThe story unfolds up to the present day, with an eye to future and more advanced techniques of forensic investigation.
In each setting, the narration is guided by the journalist's voice Gianluigi Nuzzi, which delves into each topic by revealing the scientific principles and working methods that lie behind the multiple skills entrusted to this specialist sector of the State Police. A transversal journey that captures the transformations and successes of the Scientific Police in over 120 years of its history, also through the reporting of news events, with exclusive testimonies from those who operated on the scene and those who carried out the forensic investigations, starting from Via Palestro massacre in Milano.
Nuzzi's narrative voice leads the audience to observe from the general to the particular, as during an inspection, every single element present in the environment, ranging between texts accompanied by images, central objects and video content.
The exhibition itinerary starts from the room entitled THE ORIGINS, which tells the story of the birth of the first Scientific Police school by Salvatore Ottolenghi, coroner born in Asti, disciple of Cesare Lombroso, which focused on the importance of introducing a scientific method in the criminal process given the need to identify the accused, the arrested and the wanted also through their physical description. In this room is exhibited the first photo-signalling system, known as the “Ellero twins".
We move on to crimson THE FINGERPRINT, a space where the topic is addressed of fingerprint identification, it explains what fingerprints are, when they are formed in the womb and their immutability over time; furthermore, historical photodactyloscopic tags are visible and it is possible to appreciate by touch a fingerprint reproduced with a 3D printer.
We continue in the green room entitled VIDEO SHOOTING IN PUBLIC ORDER, which talks about the importance of the support that the Scientific Police provides with the video documentation of your operators in the contexts of Public Order and Judicial Police. In this environment, the filming techniques and means used by operators over the years are illustrated and the tools used to identify individuals responsible for crimes are described.
Il yellow characterizes THE CRIME SCENE, one of the central rooms, where it is explained how the forensic police inspection is carried out and the ISO 9001/2015 Quality procedures applied to the place where a crime was committed. Here, the techniques and skills that allow operators to guarantee the collection of traces and other elements useful for identifying those responsible and reconstructing the possible dynamics of the event can be understood. In this room, it is also possible to observe “live” on some exhibited objects the concept of trace latencies and their exaltations.
Il heavenly TRACE ANALYSIS, is the environment in which the issues are explored in depth Laboratory methods of forensic genetics, highlighting of fingerprints, ballistic analysis and chemical analysis in a virtual tour that tells how the Police has interpreted the change that has affected forensic sciences, namely the choice to recruit highly specialized technicians and invest in technological development, to make the challenge against crime current and successful.
The sixth room is blu and it's called OTHER INVESTIGATIVE ACTIVITIES. Here we show how technological innovation is used in the most advanced sectors of scientific police to improve the response to the evolution of criminal threats, by resorting to emerging technologies and Artificial Intelligence tools, applied in areas such as document forgery and graphic analysis, phonic analysis, digital images and Digital Forensics. In this room you can immerse yourself in the three-dimensional reconstruction applied to artThe head of the 500th century painter Lorenzo Lotto is created starting from a self-portrait by the artist to which current techniques of image capture and enhancement, identikit, aging and 3D modeling have been applied.
It ends with the red THE 3D RECONSTRUCTION, which illustrates how new techniques for acquiring the state of the places allow the virtual reconstruction of the crime scene and the so-called "collection of forms”, also possible for tragic events that occurred in the past. In this room there are six screens that describe the technical phases and results of this activity, three of which show the results provided by the scientific police within the framework of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the kidnapping and death of Aldo Moro.
The multimedia storytelling through the different environments allows the visitor to identify with each of the many specialists of the Scientific Police, stimulating personal interest in forensic disciplines. Interaction is therefore not a simple suggestive element but a fundamental tool for immersing oneself in the work of experts.
The visit to the exhibition is included in the Museum entrance ticket.
