The precedent of 2015
The checks confirmed that Vincenzo Lanni he is not new to episodes of violence.
In 2015, the man had been arrested for stabbing two pensioners in Villa di Serio and Alzano Lombardo, in the Bergamo area. A former computer programmer, he suffered from psychiatric disorders and had been judged partially incapable of understanding and willing, being sentenced in 2016 to eight years in prison and three years of security measure in a psychiatric facility.

He said he had premeditated attack as a “symbolic act against economic power”, choosing Piazza Gae Aulenti “because it represents the heart of finance and the world that has rejected it”.
“I didn't know the woman,” he said. “I struck her by chance, as a symbol of the system that marginalized me after I was fired from an IT company ten years ago.”
He added that he also acted for anger against the recovery community who had sent him away a few days earlier.
An act of blind violence, devoid of any personal motive, which profoundly shocked public opinion and reignited the debate on the safety and management of psychiatric patients.
Institutional reactions
Il mayor of Milano, Beppe Sala, called the episode “unacceptable”:
"I express my deepest sympathy to the victim and her family. We wish her a speedy recovery and trust that justice will soon take its course."
Along the same lines, the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, spoke of "an incident that has disturbed us all."
“A serious attack that strikes at the heart of our sense of security. I thank the rescuers and doctors at Niguarda Hospital for their timely intervention.”
The incident also reignited political conflict. Some opposition figures called for a greater police presence in public places, while others stressed the need for a intervention on the health and regulatory level for the management of socially dangerous psychiatric patients.
Corbetta (Lega): "A tragedy that requires reforming the Basaglia law."
Among the harshest voices was that of Alessandro Corbetta, group leader of Alloy in the Lombardy Region, which expressed solidarity with the victim but also strong indignation at the repetition of episodes of this type.
"Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Finlombarda employee who was stabbed and we wish her a speedy recovery. The anger stems from the fact that the person who attacked, without any reason, had already committed stabbings in the past and was undergoing treatment for psychiatric issues. It's absurd that he was free to roam the city."
Corbetta then launched a appeal to Parliament:
“We ask that immediate action be taken to reform the Basaglia lawThere are too many people with serious mental disorders wandering unchecked. We need to address what has gone wrong to prevent innocent citizens from becoming victims of the sick and left free.”
The League group leader added:
This is not an exception. In the same days, we have seen other cases of absurd violence, such as that of a Senegalese man who beat seven women and whom the court had not deemed a threat to society. It's clear that our cities are no longer safe. We need more restrictive, stronger measures to protect decent people who cannot be attacked or killed by those who lack reason.
Alessandro Corbetta – League Group Leader in the Lombardy Region
Milano It awakens after yet another act of violence in broad daylight, in the heart of its most modern skyline. The attack in Piazza Gae Aulenti isn't just a news story, but the symbol of a profound malaise: that of a society struggling to protect the most vulnerable—and to defend itself from those who, left alone, can become a danger.
As Corbetta concluded, “The time has come to fully address this emergency, without any more excuses, to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.”
