Opened at Milano a center of excellence for research on Parkinson's Disease
A 'Clinical Research Center' monothematic for the study of Parkinson's disease, with specialist clinics and cutting-edge technologies, to offer new clinical research approaches based on the analysis of the information content of medical data and the in-depth study of the various patient problems in specialist clinics.
It was inaugurated on the morning of October 31, in the presence of the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, at the CTO hospital, of the ASST Pini/CTO, in via Bignami 1, in Milano, the result of a path that saw the collaboration between ASST Gaetano Pini — CTO and Fondazione Pezzoli – formerly Fondazione Grigioni – for Parkinson's Disease, led by Professor Gianni Pezzoli, with the coordination of Professor John Ugo Isaias, director of the Parkinson and Parkinsonism Center.
“The Foundation – said the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana – has financed the purchase of all the devices of the research laboratories that allow for the treatment and care of highly complex patients, coming from all over Italy. A choice that will undoubtedly be rewarded because personalized clinical pathways are only possible thanks to scientific progress. Once again, the Lombardy model of collaboration between the public and private sectors is also a winner for the strategic function of single-theme research, such as that on Parkinson's. And the Pini-CTO, with the number of cases treated (a database of 40.000 patients), allows both to treat the pathology and to investigate, for preventive purposes, the risk factors and produce useful comparative clinical studies. Neurodegenerative diseases have a high cost for health systems, focusing on prevention and risk factors is an aspect of great importance”.
“The birth of the Centre – declared the General Director of ASST Gaetano Pini-CTO, Paola Lattuada – testifies to the success of the collaboration between the public and private sectors for a fundamental cause: to guarantee patients with Parkinson's disease who come to the Parkinson and Parkinsonism Center of the ASST a place of care that combines clinical care, research and cutting-edge technological innovation. On this important day, which is part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Gaetano Pini Orthopedic Institute, I would like to thank in particular President Fontana who is always attentive to the needs of the healthcare world, Professor Pezzoli and Professor Isaias, for having made this new project possible, which adds a significant piece to the offer of the CTO hospital, a center of excellence at the regional and national level, and in the overall framework of our public healthcare”.
"The activities of the Clinical Research Center will allow for individual simulations on the expected effectiveness of particular interventions and their preventive impact on the development of complications. It will also allow for individualized benchmarking for the patient, to evaluate and understand the individual state of the disease in its course, for the healthcare professional, to control the quality and effectiveness of the chosen therapeutic paradigm and, for society, to guarantee the best medical care to its citizens with Parkinson's and evaluate its impact in terms of return on investment" explained Professor Gianni Pezzoli, Chairman of the Pezzoli Foundation for Parkinson's Disease formerly the Grigioni Foundation for Parkinson's Disease, which has taken on the new name, taking the name of its founder, who helped make it a point of reference in research for Parkinson's Disease in Italy.
The purchase of all the equipment present within the Research Laboratories of the Center, from wearable sensors for home monitoring, to instrumentation for the kinematic analysis of gait, from devices for the study of dysautonomia to innovative devices for high-intensity electroencephalographic recordings that will allow the treatment and care of even highly complex patients, coming from all over Italy, within the scope of research projects and personalized clinical pathways, was also made possible thanks to the funding of the Pezzoli Foundation for Parkinson's Disease, founded in 1993 and always linked to the Italian Parkinson's Association (AIP).
“The major implications of the scientific activity of the Clinical Research Centre – explained Professor John Ugo Isaias, director of the Parkinson and Parkinsonism Center – will concern the understanding of the etiopathological mechanisms of Parkinson's disease and the development of new precision medicine approaches, a further strengthening of the activities of the Parkinson and Parkinsonism Center, which for over thirty years has represented a Lombard excellence in the international panorama for the study and treatment of Parkinson's disease and movement disorders with a number of patients managed exceeding 40.000".
The overall objective, therefore, is to ensure personalization of care and digitalization of therapeutic decision-making and monitoring processes for a concrete management of the needs of the individual patient in his family and social context in all phases of the disease. This knowledge will provide new, more precise and personalized therapeutic options (genetic, pharmacological infusion, or neuromodulation) to ensure the best possible quality of life and hope for a slowing of symptoms or a cure.
La Parkinson's disease is a multisystem neurodegenerative disease characterized by a combination of motor symptoms, such as slowing of movement, rigidity, and tremor, and non-motor symptoms. These include a series of cognitive (dementia), neuropsychiatric (depression, anxiety, psychosis), sleep, autonomic, and sensory (orthostatic hypotension, urinary urgency, constipation, pain) dysfunctions with a major impact on the quality of life of patients and their families. The prevalence of Parkinson's disease has increased by 155% since 1990 and is continuing to rise.
