The "The Roots of Sport" project is born: 120 trees in Liguria to celebrate the year of the "European Region of Sport 2025".
"The Roots of Sport," the new project designed to celebrate the year of "Liguria European Region of Sport 2025," was officially presented in the Liguria Region's Transparency Hall. The initiative, strongly supported by the regional Department of Sport, symbolically unites sport, the environment, and community through the planting of 120 new trees and plants in the four Ligurian capitals: Genoa, Imperia, La Spezia, and Savona.
A symbolic gesture for a green legacy of Ligurian sport
The project was born with the aim of leaving a concrete and lasting mark of the year in which the Liguria will be a key player in European sport. Each tree represents a tribute to the sports clubs that will receive regional funding or sponsorship in 2025, bringing the region to life with hundreds of events, competitions, and demonstrations.
“The idea was born from the desire to leave a tangible sign of this extraordinary year – explained the regional councillor for Sport Simona Iron –. The roots of sport are deeply rooted in our region, and we want to start from here. With this symbolic gesture, we celebrate the growth and vitality of the Ligurian sports movement, leaving behind a green legacy that will endure for years to come. Tree planting will begin in November: let's plant today, in 2025, to cultivate a green heritage that will last a lifetime."
The areas involved in the four Ligurian provinces
The areas chosen by the Municipalities were identified in close connection with sports practice, demonstrating the profound connection between sport and environmental sustainability.
A Imperia, the intervention will affect the Angelo Lagorio athletics field, where eleven trees will be planted. all in the province of Savona , the 25 trees will be placed in the Parco delle Nazioni, near the new area dedicated to calisthenics. GenoVa, over 50 plants will find their place in the green spaces of Villa Doria, next to the basketball court and the play areas. Finally, at Spezia, 30 trees will be planted at the Alessandro Montagna sports center, a point of reference for numerous local disciplines.
A project combining sport, sustainability, and community
After the plantings, commemorative signs will be installed in each area to remember the initiative and the names of the sports clubs in the province that in 2025 will have contributed to bringing the title of “Liguria European Region of Sport”.
The initiative “The Roots of Sport” It not only represents an environmental project, but also a symbol of recognition and territorial cohesion, combining sport with environmental protection and the growth of local communities.
