Coast defense. Rimini coast, beaches ready for summer

La Rimini coast è ready for the arrival ofsummer and  new bathing season: along the coast, from north to south, there are concluded i works to replenish the beaches, with the inclusion of over 50 thousand cubic meters di sand, and to strengthen reefs and sea defenses with hundreds di sacchi e rocks calcareous.

With a commitment of about 500 thousand euros, the interventions necessary to reprofile the beaches affected the entire coast; in parallel, work was done on reefs, submerged barriers in bags and other defenses for mitigate erosion and counteract the advancement of water, with a project worth a total of around 560 thousand euros. The recalibration of the sea cliffs is also nearing completion, an intervention financed by about 1,5 million euro.

The works, coordinated by the Rimini Office of the Regional Agency for Territorial Security and Civil Protection, are carried out as per the intervention plan with funds from the regional programming 2023-2025 against hydrogeological instability. For contracts involving the Rimini coast, over the three-year period, the Region has put in place 2 million 780 thousand EUR. To these resources are added those provided by Pnrr for the maintenance of the coast north of the province of Rimini part of a larger intervention by over 3,1 million of euros, which also affects the province of Forlì-Cesena.

The interventions, in detail
For the nourishment of the coast, with the works started at the end of the last bathing season, sand was moved from advancing stretches of coastline, screening deposits, back-cliff tombolos, dredging of river mouths. These are periodic and constant interventions that allow the profile of the beaches to be kept stable, despite the repetition of weather-marine events which, every year, have an increasingly stronger impact on the regional coastline. The works, the first tranche of a 980 thousand euro contract, will continue at the end of the tourist season.

A Misano e Riccione the maintenance involved the "rigid works", i.e. fundamental artefacts against erosion and marine intrusion. In Misano, with approximately 280 thousand euros, the maintenance of the submerged barrier in bags, in front of the coast, was completed with the installation of 1.250 bags. The installation of a further 600 bags in the similar barrier in front of Riccione is also nearing completion, while the restoration of the groyne perpendicular to the shore line positioned in the section bordering the municipality of Misano, where 900 bags will be positioned, has been postponed until October. thanks to a total investment of 285 thousand euros.

A Bellaria Igea Marina the recalibration of the cliffs, which began in April, is part of the maintenance necessary to restore the efficiency of the defenses. Second and third category limestone rocks (up to 5 tons in weight) from Croatian quarries were inserted here and transported with large barges across the Adriatic. The works, part of a contract financed by the Pnrr which also involves the neighboring municipalities of gatteo e Cesenatico, will be interrupted during the bathing season and then resumed and concluded within the year.
