Crema: An enraged man attacks a health worker and a passerby. Tensions rise on Viale Europa, and police intervene.
CREMA – Thursday, July 10th was a night of fear and tension on Viale Europa, where a severely disturbed man unleashed chaos, attacking emergency responders and a passerby. The incident, which occurred around 118:20 PM, required the emergency intervention of the State Police and is still the subject of heated debate in the city.
The emergency intervention
It all began when a young passerby noticed a man, apparently unconscious, lying on the pavement. The emergency number 112 was immediately called. A Croce Verde ambulance arrived on the scene, and its operators determined that the man—a man in his XNUMXs—was likely suffering from alcohol poisoning.
Thanks to resuscitation maneuvers, paramedics managed to revive him. But the relief was short-lived: upon awakening, the man reacted violently, attempting to attack both the medical staff and the passerby who had raised the alarm. Within moments, the situation escalated.
Escalation of violence and temporary escape of rescuers
Faced with such an unpredictable and aggressive reaction, the paramedics deemed it appropriate to feign a retreat to safety, simultaneously alerting the State Police. The situation, however, did not calm down. When the crew returned to complete the operation, the man was even more agitated, brandishing a beer bottle and threatening anyone who approached.
The attack moved to the middle of the road, forcing those present to temporarily block traffic to prevent accidents. The man's clumsy gestures and screams caused panic among passersby. Even the young man who had first provided assistance tried, in vain, to defend the paramedics. But the man's fury forced everyone to take cover again.
The chase to Ombriano and the intervention of the police
Meanwhile, the young passerby remained in constant telephone contact with the police operations center, remotely tracking the man's movements, who headed toward Piazza Benvenuti, in the hamlet of Ombriano. It was there that State Police officers, along with paramedics, finally managed to reach him. After a prolonged tense moment, the man was calmed down and rendered harmless, without further confrontation.
No action taken: controversy mounts
The outcome of the incident, however, is surprising: the man was not subjected to any legal or medical measures. No arrest, no compulsory medical treatment (TSO), no hospitalization for tests. This outcome left many of those present perplexed and outraged, as well as the 118 emergency workers themselves, who experienced moments of genuine danger while on duty.
Healthcare workers complain: "More and more exposed."
The incident has brought the safety of emergency workers back into the spotlight, as they increasingly fall victim to assaults, even serious ones, while carrying out their duties. "It's not the first time we've encountered situations like this," said a 118 emergency worker, "but it's increasingly difficult to deal with them, knowing that the attackers often go unpunished."
The silence of passersby and collective indifference
Beyond the physical violence, the episode highlighted another social wound: indifference. According to witnesses, at least a dozen people passed by the man lying on the ground before the rescue, without stopping or calling for help. Only one young man—the first responder—had the courage and civic sense to act.
A wake-up call for the city
The entire incident is a worrying wake-up call for Crema and beyond. The lack of institutional response and the increasing exposure of emergency responders to dangerous situations raise serious questions about the management of public order and healthcare in emergencies.
We remain grateful to those who, with a sense of duty and courage, chose not to look the other way. But we also feel a bitter taste in our mouths for an intervention that, though carried out professionally, ended without justice or prevention.
