San Giovanni La Punta: Civil Protection, Schifani Visits the Regional Operations Center
The first time a regional president has Regional operations center of the Civil Protection, gradually activated over a couple of years San Giovanni La Punta, in the hinterland of Catania. The governor was accompanied by the general manager of the regional department of Civil Protection, Except Cocina. Also present were the mayor of the Etna town, Nino Bellia, and the regional commander of the Fire Brigade, Agatino Carrolo.
Schifani reviewed the teams of staff and volunteers, thanking them for their valuable contribution to the protection of the territorial heritage. He then visited the large and modern structure equipped with anti-seismic isolators, the large hangar, the two tent structures and the vehicles on the yards. He was then welcomed in the conference room by the Civil Protection choir who sang the Italian anthem and the anthem of the Sicilian Region.
«The Sicilian Civil Protection – said the President Schifani to the crowded audience – is our flagship, as is this operational structure. Engineer Cocina, with his entire team, is doing an extraordinary job for the government and to address the critical issues of the territory, managing various emergencies; from the tragic issue of drought to calamitous events linked to increasingly stronger meteorological phenomena. Last year we mainly dealt with the fire crisis, this year the water crisis. Climate change is putting us to the test, but the Civil Protection system, with the many volunteers who are involved, is absolutely precious, ready to operate also in other Italian regions that have suffered catastrophic events».
"I'm happy," he said. Kitchen introducing the meeting – to have my staff and volunteers present here. A volunteer who donates his time and his work for others who need it will never say “it's not my competence, but others'…“, he will never say “I wrote so much and I'm fine“These phrases belong to certain administrators and bureaucrats who perhaps do not have a full perception of the emergency that affects everyone and that we are called to face.”
«I am very happy – added the President Schifani – to have accepted this invitation and to be here where there are institutions, where there is volunteering, where there are those who want to help our land in difficult times, understanding the importance of creating a system to protect the territory. Emergencies require everyone's effort to be overcome and there is no need for acts of personal justice, such as the protests that occurred for the Ancipa dam. We flew over some of the basins of the Island to realize the state of the reservoirs. The Ancipa now appears with decidedly more water thanks to the latest rains, even if there remain large critical issues for which we must continue to work together, also looking at long-term solutions. We are surrounded by the sea, We will work to ensure that with desalination plants, as well as with conventional sources and with leak elimination works, Sicily has the possibility of guaranteeing water to all its inhabitants. We must make this commitment to the Sicilians. This is my job, and I will carry it out until the end of my mandate.».
