Subsequently, they naturally initiated a thorough inspection of the premises, during which they found various work tools scattered on the floor, including screwdrivers, pliers and wire cutters, tools commonly used for dismantling metal systems and structures and in fact, they also found some electrical cables already cut and ready to be removed. The two tried to provide the Carabinieri with clearly imaginative justifications for their presence in that place, claiming that they had not stolen anything and declaring that they had arrived on the scene shortly before on a bus, rather than with the car found in the area.

However, their claims were immediately denied by investigators, who found that the car showed clear signs of recent use and, from subsequent checks in the database, was registered in the name of the 37-year-old's wife. Their explanations were of no avail and, at the end of the operations, the two individuals were reported for attempted aggravated theft in competition.
