Mafia and drugs: dawn raid in Catania and Reggio Calabria, 14 arrests for trafficking and weapons.

Since dawn this morning over 200 Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Catania, with the support of the specialized departments of the Arma (Helicopter Squadron “Cacciatori Sicilia”, First Response Unit, Dog Unit and Helicopter Unit), are executing a custody order against 14 individuals in the provinces of Catania and Reggio Calabria, issued by the GIP of the Court of Catania at the request of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate.

The defendants are seriously accused, to varying degrees, without prejudice to the presumption of innocence until a final sentence of conviction, of the crimes of armed association for the purpose of drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition, aggravated assault and receiving stolen goods, with the aggravating circumstance of the mafia method.

The investigations, carried out by the investigators of the Carabinieri Company of Acireale, have allowed the reconstruction of the operations of a criminal group rooted in Aci Catena and Acireale, attributable to the Santapaola-Ercolano mafia family, active in the trafficking of cocaine, crack, marijuana and skunk.

The organization would also have used the intimidating power deriving from the associative bond and the mafia membership to control the territory and manage the illicit activities. The operation is still ongoing.
