Catania: Carabinieri arrest a car thief and recover the stolen goods

The Catania Mobile Radio Unit deploys several patrols on the territory, 24 hours a day – both radio cars, the so-called “gazelles”, and motorcycles – with the main task of provide a prompt response to requests for intervention made by citizens to the emergency number 112, As well as of repress ongoing crimes.

In this operational context, in the “Centro” district, a “gazelle” has theft foiled of some personal effects contained in the car of a 25 year old from Catania, arresting a 50 year old man from Catania in flagrante.

In particular, it was shortly before midnight when the thief, after having the window of a Fiat Panda was broken, was entered the passenger compartment to rummage between the seats, in the glove compartment and on the back seat, calmly choosing what he needed and hiding it in a box. Then, as if nothing had happened, the man he was moving away, unaware, however, that a conscientious citizen, who had witnessed the whole scene, had immediately called the emergency number 112 to report what has just been seen, also providing the operators of the Operations Centre with a detailed description of the clothing he was wearing.

Immediate therefore, the operational synergy between the Headquarters and patrols, and in a handful of minutes two crews were already on site. Here, the Carabinieri divided the tasks and, while one patrol started the necessary investigations to trace the owner of the vehicle, the other, after a very brief reconnaissance of the area, tracked down and stopped the thief who, on foot, was carrying the large box containing the stolen goods.

The 50enne, having noticed the presence of the Carabinieri, tried in vain to get rid of the stolen goods by throwing them on the ground, then take an emergency glass-breaking hammer out of your pocket and throw it a few meters away. The military, however, have blocked and secured, recovering everything, or a pair of inline skates, four collectible lighters, a mini car vacuum cleaner and some chocolate bars, which were then returned to the owner of the car.

Given the more than exhaustive investigative framework, the criminal was arrested and made available to the Judicial Authority that validated the act.
