Licodia Eubea: Two scams targeting elderly people foiled thanks to advice from the Carabinieri

Since last year, the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri of Catania has started an important awareness campaign to combat the hateful one phenomenon of scams, often carried out to the detriment of the weakest sections of the community. The meetings, held throughout the province of Etna, were also aimed at citizens of the Calatina area in order to provide them with the means to recognize scams and not fall into the trap. During the meetings, the Carabinieri of the Caltagirone Company They illustrated the most frequent ways in which scammers approach victims, often leveraging their emotions, faking an arrest or a car accident of children or grandchildren, and then provided some valuable practical advice for unmasking the criminals.

In these early days of 2025, Two attempted scams targeting the elderly have already been foiled, both in the municipality of Licodia Eubea, thanks to the information work carried out by the Carabinieri. In particular, in one case, the scammer, introducing himself as a “Marshal of the Carabinieri”, told an 83-year-old that his daughter had run over a pregnant woman and, therefore, had been taken to the barracks to be arrested; however, the elderly parent could have avoided the legal consequences by paying a “bail” to the fake lawyer. Fortunately, the elderly man was in the company of another daughter to whom, suspicious, he passed the phone and so did the criminal, urged by the woman who, Having understood the scam, he started asking him many questions, he gave up his intent and stopped communicating.

In the second case, instead, an 80-year-old woman, having received a phone call from the fake “Carabinieri”, didn’t even give the scammers time to tell them about the usual fake accident, because she reiterated that she wouldn’t open the door to anyone, interrupting the call and immediately calling 112.

These two elderly gentlemen put into practice what the Carabinieri advised them during meetings inside the village church.:

  • No member of the Police Force, nor of companies providing public services or lawyers may ask for money or valuable objects, for any reason whatsoever, for a service or even for the resolution of a problem;
  • You should not provide any personal information or bank account details to strangers;
  • you shouldn't open the door to people you don't know or to door-to-door salesmen;
  • at the slightest suspicion, hang up the phone and immediately call the emergency number “112” or contact the nearest Carabinieri station.

The Arma's commitment against fraud will continue throughout 2025 to reach more and more citizens and ensure that they can immediately recognize scams., thus strengthening the bond of trust and closeness with our communities. The advice, therefore, in case of doubts is: “Contact the Carabinieri”.
