Catania: Assets worth over 300 thousand euros seized from “Turi 'u gummista”, investigated for mafia association

Following complex investigations carried out by the Carabinieri of the Company's Operational Unit Carabinieri of Catania – Fontanarossa – coordinated by this Public Prosecutor's Office, the aforementioned military personnel have executed a Seizure Decree for the purposes of any confiscation, issued by the local Court - Preventive Measures Section, against Salvatore Giuffrida, Said “Turi'u gummister”, 49 year old from Catania, currently detained.

The activity started in follow-up of the investigations, conducted by the Carabinieri of the Operational Nucleus from September 2020 to March 2021 and coordinated by this Public Prosecutor's Office, which would have allowed to outline theexistence of a proven organization, consisting of 45 Guests, dedicated to the commission of theft, extortion and receiving stolen goods, as well as, as would have emerged from a second investigative line, of a significant channel of drug trafficking in the “San Giorgio” district with the involvement in various capacities of 30 Guests.

This is the operational context, crystallized over the years by the Public Prosecutor's Office and the investigators, which provided the elements necessary for the issuing by the Court of Catania, on the basis of which the seizure for the purposes of possible confiscation of an apartment and attached garage for a total of 270 mXNUMX, with a market value of approximately 300 thousand euros, as well as a measure of freezing of current accounts and seizure of money "for equivalent" for an amount of an additional 45 thousand euros.

In particular, the elements collected would have allowed to demonstrate the “social dangerousness” of the recipient of this preventive measure, as he is accused of belong to a mafia-type criminal association, accused of the crime of association dedicated to drug trafficking, in addition to being a subject that lives, even in part, on the proceeds of criminal activities.

In particular, the in-depth and detailed asset investigations carried out by the Carabinieri investigators and by this Prosecutor's Office, and the examination of the economic activities of Giuffrida and his family between 2010 and 2021, would have allowed to document the disproportion between the income capacity of the aforementioned subjects and the huge value of the assets available to the subject subjected to prevention proceedings (in the case in question Giuffrida) which, on the basis of the current regulatory system, would consequently represent the reinvestment of profits resulting from illicit activities.
