With yesterday's operation, the daily commitment of the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Catania towards the protection of animal rights is confirmed, to combat the commission of crimes of maltreatment, often related to the illegal horse racing industry.

In this context, the military personnel of the Piazza Dante Company and those of the Carabinieri Command for Health Protection – NAS of Catania – with the support of the veterinarians of the ASP of Catania, have started an effective and targetedrepressive action both in the city's historic districts, both in the province of Catania, implemented along 2 main lines: the first is to try to stop the races, the second is the control activity on the territory with the searches in the stables.

In this regard, following an in-depth info-investigative activity, the military reported four citizens of Catania aged 63, 52, 51 with previous police records and a 45-year-old with no criminal record for the crimes of "keeping animals in conditions incompatible with their nature", in competition with each other.

In particular, the 63 had set up, in the “San Cristoforo” district, a absolutely illegal stable since before any type of authorization, in which they were locked up 3 horsepower. The man had then assigned a specific task to each of his collaborators: the 51-year-old nephew was the manager of the stable as well as being formally the owner of the horses, the 52-year-old acted as breeder and the 45-year-old carried out the role of guard and, in fact, the Carabinieri arrested him. caught while sleeping in a nearby outbuilding.

The inspection of that place, a old structure used as a stable, in which 5 boxes had been created, allowed us to ascertain that it was not suitable for animals because the horse stalls had a roof less than 3 metres high, small windows without frames which therefore did not allow for regular air circulation or adequate lighting, and peeling and dirty walls.

Furthermore, on some shelves the Carabinieri recovered 5 bottles of veterinary medicine containing vitamins but also hormones of growth, in addition to syringes and gauze, but no medical prescription required for the purchase and possession of those products, some of which, moreover, may be administered exclusively by veterinarians or, in any case, under their direct supervision.

In the structure, then, some were also found sports carriages which confirmed the military's hypothesis that the horses were used for clandestine races.

The poor horses, forced to live in those narrow spaces, there were a female and two males, one of which was only 6 months old, and they had no identification documents but, thanks to the reading of the chip by the ASP staff, the soldiers were able to trace at least their date of birth. In order to protect their health, the Carabinieri they seized them and handed them over to a legal establishment for judicial custody, outside the province, while the drugs were seized.
The four abusive “groomsmen” were reported to the Judicial Authority of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Catania.
