Bolzano: gender violence and mistreatment in the family, Police arrest 40-year-old from Merano.

The Agents of the Judicial Police Team of the Merano Public Safety Commissariat arrested a 40-year-old Merano man in execution of an Order issued by the Judicial Authority.
The man, who has several criminal records against him for illegal possession of weapons, resistance to a public official, mistreatment in the family and abuse of the means of correction against his children, will have to serve a sentence of 2 years and 4 months in prison for the crimes of domestic abuse and abuse of correctional facilities.

The facts that earned him the conviction by the Court of Bolzano began in 2007, and continued until the last few days; specifically, the investigation activity of the Police began last December, when there was an intervention by the “Flying” team of the Merano police station at the man's home following a violent argument in which the same subject and his wife were protagonists.

On that occasion the woman had been violently beaten by her husband, and had been forced to leave the house with only two blankets on her to spend the night in the open. Upon a complaint from the couple's adult son, the provincial search plan was activated, which allowed the police to find the woman after a few days and provide her with assistance.

The investigation by the State Police began from this very serious episode of domestic violence which, in a short time, made it possible to find and prove that in previous years there had been other interventions by the police at the house where the man has always lived with his Merano wife and three children, due to the continuous mistreatment and beatings that the man continued to inflict on his family members for a long time, the trigger of which was often the continuous abuse of alcoholic substances.

The activity of the investigators of the Merano police station provided current and concrete elements regarding the oppressive conduct of the man, who had an ongoing precautionary measure of probation to social services.

Furthermore, he had long since interrupted contact with the CARITAS Counseling Center for Abusive Men, where he had undertaken an anti-violence programme.
What happened and documented by the Merano Police was deemed by the Court of Bolzano to be incompatible with any alternative measure, also highlighting a lack of ability to manage one's existence in compliance with the imposed prescriptions. With these motivations the Judicial Authority decided to adopt a Provision of imprisonment with immediate effect against the subject.

At the end of the judicial police proceedings, the man was transferred to the Bolzano prison where he will serve the sentence handed down to him.

“There are more and more cases in which the Police Forces are called to intervene to deal with situations characterized by obsessive persecutory acts, often resulting in aggressive and violent behaviour, which in themselves represent, among other things, worrying expressions of problems of cultural character, which too often affect victims who are unable to defend themselves – highlighted the Police Chief of the province of Bolzano Paolo Sartori –. Even the dynamics of this family context of violence and mistreatment further strengthens the idea of how the critical situations that afflict our society must necessarily be addressed by networking between institutions, local authorities, anti-violence centers and voluntary associations. The State Police has always been at the forefront, even with specific projects, in indicating paths of awareness and awareness of the negative value of what has been committed, with the aim, also, of helping victims to defend themselves, to ask for help and to report the violence suffered".
