Ascoli Piceno: the second edition of “Rinascimento Marchigiano” inaugurated.

The second edition of the exhibition “Marche Renaissance – Artworks Restored from the Earthquake Sites Along the Paths of Faith”, curated by Stefano Papetti and Pierluigi Moriconi, after the inauguration and exhibition in Rome at the Monumental Complex of San Salvatore in Lauro, of the Pio Sodalizio dei Piceni, moves to Ascoli Piceno and will be inaugurated on Friday 20 December at 11 am in the Sala della Ragione in Palazzo dei Capitani, remaining on display until 23 March 2025.

The exhibition, which has received great critical and public success in Rome, is organised by Pious Sodality of the Piceni ed Anci Marche, protagonists of a now consolidated partnership born to safeguard and promote the historical-artistic heritage preserved in the earthquake areas, the traditions and the historical identity of the territory also following the numerous requests coming from the municipalities and the Dioceses.

Hence the desire to finance for the second time the initiative “Rinascimento Marchigiano” which had already been promoted in 2019 by the two bodies and which has now achieved great importance, both at regional and national level, also demonstrated by the presence of the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, who chose the presentation in Rome for his first public outing.

The exhibition is the second of a cycle that includes, after Rome and Ascoli Piceno, other stops in the Marche region, Ancona e San Severino Marche. It is produced in collaboration with the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of the Provinces of Ascoli Piceno, Fermo and Macerata, and that of the Provinces of Ancona and Pesaro and Urbino, the contribution of Extraordinary Commissioner for the 2016 Earthquake Reconstruction, of the Marche Region, the municipalities of Ascoli Piceno, Ancona and San Severino Marche and the Artifex organization.

The selected works come from the places hit by the earthquakes that struck the Marche and are located along the paths traveled by pilgrims who, until the 19th century, undertook this expiatory practice: it is therefore not difficult to imagine that, before these sacred images, not only local communities but also millions of foreigners gathered in prayer, moved by the desire to undertake an inner journey of salvation.

After the work done following the 2016 earthquake, which hit the south of the Marche Region, in November 2022 the provinces of Pesaro Urbino and Ancona were hit by the earthquake which also caused significant damage to the artistic, monumental and cultural heritage belonging to Public and Private Bodies and in particular to the Ecclesiastical ones.

The restoration work was entrusted to restorers from the Marche region.

The inauguration will be attended by:

  • Marco Fioravanti, Mayor of Ascoli Piceno and President of Anci Marche
  • Senator Guido Castelli, Extraordinary Commissioner for the 2016 Earthquake Reconstruction
  • Stephen Papetti e Pierluigi Moriconi, curators of the exhibition
