Ten shows between drama and comedy for the Sondrio Theater Season.
The first show is just over a month away but the eagerly awaited 2023/2024 theater season of the Municipality of Sondrio officially opened yesterday with the presentation of the program that the Councilor for Culture, Education and Instruction Marcella Fratta wanted to share with the public at the Teatro Sociale. An absolute premiere destined to become usual for the appreciation of season ticket holders and theater enthusiasts present.
The presentation
The artistic director Andrea Ragosta and the histrionic Gianna Coletti, actress and singer, took to the stage and presented the ten titles on the program one by one, making use of the video contributions projected on the big screen.
Actors, directors and producers greeted the Sondrio public in view of the start of a theatrical season which will alternate classics with contemporary ones, drama with comedy, new and old productions, the most talented protagonists of our stage and the performers made famous from television. A program that summarizes different sensibilities to meet the tastes of a varied audience.
Ten plays
«Ten very significant works in various respects – summarized councilor Fratta at the beginning -. It was very intense work: since last January we started preparing the theater season and making agreements with the companies. We are gratified to see you here today: we felt it was important to meet our audience before the shows because you have a fundamental role."
The public is at the center of everything, as underlined shortly afterwards by the artistic director Ragosta who in his thanks to the municipal administration and the employees addressed a special one: «To you who support us». The billboard is introduced and characterized by a phrase from the American playwright Arthur Miller, chosen by councilor Fratta to summarize the beauty of life and live entertainment: “Theatre is so infinitely fascinating because it is so casual. It's like life."
The imaginary invalid – The last journey
One after the other, Ragosta and Coletti presented the shows. “The Imaginary Invalid – The Last Journey”, on stage on 25 October, with the original story and direction by Marco Zoppello, who uses the last work written by Molière as a pretext to give life to a story full of surprises. A popular theater, very direct, as defined by Stefano Rota, who plays the French playwright, appearing on the same stage where in the past season the Stivalaccio Company had staged "Arlecchino furioso".
A view from the bridge
A great story told as in a film is the premise that accompanies "A View from the Bridge", one of Arthur Miller's best-known texts, brought to the cinema in 1962 by Sidney Lumet, with Raf Vallone as the protagonist. It is directed by Massimo Popolizio, an acclaimed film and theater actor: it is scheduled for November 16th. Maddalena Crippa plays “The Birthday” by Harold Pinter, one of the most appreciated English playwrights, Nobel Prize winner for literature in 2005.
This comedy that evolves into hilarious situations will be performed in Sondrio on November 29th.
The duck with orange
A lightness that can be found in the best-known "The Orange Duck", scheduled for December 11th, starring Emilio Solfrizzi and Carlotta Natoli, who represent in the theater the couple made famous by television in "Tutti Crazy for Love". It is the Neapolitan actor himself who remembers him in the video message sent to greet the Sondrio public.
For Giovanni Scifoni, also known to viewers for his appearances, in particular in “Doc”, author and performer of “Fra'. Saint Francis the superstar of the Middle Ages”, the patron saint of Italy is a star comparable to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones who in an era without mass media brought together thousands of people. In his video message he defines him as "an extraordinary performer" and gives an appointment in Sondrio for January 10th.
The irresistible boys
Umberto Orsini and Franco Branciaroli, star performers of Italian theatre, will make their debut at the end of November, and will be at the Teatro Sociale on 22 January, with Neil Simon's comedy "The Irresistible Boys", eager to show themselves in a different, more frivolous guise, to entertain the public, as Orsini himself highlighted in the video message. February 2 will be under the sign of crime fiction, with one of the most represented classics, “Mousetrap”, by the master Agatha Christie, full of suspense and irony, with Ettore Bassi as the protagonist and directed by Giorgio Gallione, presented with a video message by producer Valerio Santoro.
The Maria Brasca
On 20 February the theater season will continue with “La Maria Brasca” by Giovanni Testori, admirably rendered by Gianna Coletti in a mini monologue, written in 1959 for Franca Valeri to represent the scandalous life, according to the standards of the time, of a worker twenty-seven year old in love with her Romeo Camisasca, three years younger. Marina Rocco is the protagonist. “Murder in the Cathedral,” by Thomas Stearns Eliot, will be performed on March 6.
In the video message screened yesterday during the presentation, one of the protagonists, Moni Ovadia, defined it as "an extraordinary dramaturgical and poetic text by one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century", focused on the conflict between the power of the kingdom and the power of faith.
Little Women
The theatrical season will end on March 22nd with a classic of American literature, “Little Women”, in the Broadway musical version, which debuted in Italy this year: overwhelming, romantic and poignant as only Louisa May Alcott's story can be .
