Con Katabasis, Samantha Casella firma un’opera intensa e visionaria che conferma il suo ruolo di voce originale del cinema d’autore italiano contemporaneo. Pluripremiata nei festival internazionali e apprezzata dalla critica specializzata, la regista torna a esplorare i territori più profondi dell’animo umano, dando forma a un racconto che oscilla tra realtà e sogno, tra memoria, dolore e trasformazione.
Katabasis rappresenta il secondo capitolo della “Trilogia del Subconscio”, un progetto artistico iniziato con Santa Guerra e destinato a concludersi con La tenerezza del serpente, attualmente in fase di realizzazione. Un percorso coerente e radicale, che affonda le radici già nel saggio di regia presentato alla Scuola di Cinema Immagina di Giuseppe Ferlito, e che oggi trova piena maturità espressiva.
Una casa-prigione e un amore segreto
Al centro della narrazione di Katabasis c’è Aron (interpretato da Francesco Leone), giovane divo che vive una relazione segreta con Nora, interpretata dalla stessa Samantha Casella, donna di vent’anni più grande e figura enigmatica, conosciuta solo da chi gravita intorno alla maestosa villa in cui la coppia vive. La casa, spazio chiuso e sospeso, si trasforma progressivamente in una prigione simbolica, teatro di segreti, menzogne, ipocrisie e tensioni sotterranee.
L’equilibrio fragile tra Aron e Nora viene messo in crisi dall’ostilità di un manager cinico, la cui avversione sembra affondare le radici in un passato oscuro. Attorno ai protagonisti si muovono personaggi ambigui, segnati da dolori inconsolabili, che fanno emergere gradualmente una rete di inganni e non detti, spingendo la storia verso una dimensione sempre più perturbante.
Una regia onirica e futurista
In Katabasis, Samantha Casella rinuncia consapevolmente a una narrazione lineare per abbracciare una regia onirica, surreale e futurista, capace di restituire l’asprezza di una quotidianità “accecante, stridente, decadente”. La realtà, nel suo cinema, non è mai neutra: è deformata, filtrata dal subconscio, attraversata da simboli e visioni.
«Non mi interessa raccontare una realtà vuota – sembra suggerire il film – ma ciò che si nasconde sotto la superficie». Una ricerca che invita lo spettatore a guardarsi dentro, a confrontarsi con le proprie zone d’ombra, con l’indole più profonda e fragile, nella speranza di far riaffiorare una magia perduta.
Dalla vittima al carnefice: il tema dell’abuso
Dopo aver dato forma al trauma in Santa Guerra, in Katabasis la regista affronta il tema dell’abuso da una prospettiva complessa e disturbante. Nora non è semplicemente una vittima: è una donna che, dopo aver subito violenza, diventa persecutrice, ribaltando i ruoli tradizionali.
«Non mi interessava mostrare una donna vittima – afferma Casella – bensì una donna diventata una sorta di carnefice, disposta a mettere se stessa davanti a tutto e a tutti pur di sopravvivere». Una scelta narrativa coraggiosa, che rompe le semplificazioni e indaga le contraddizioni interiori di chi è stato ferito.
Cinema come memoria dell’infanzia
Alla base della poetica di Samantha Casella c’è una riflessione profonda sul divario tra ciò che siamo da bambini e ciò che diventiamo da adulti. «Spesso ciò che facciamo nella vita è la copia imperfetta di quello che sognavamo di fare», spiega la regista. Tradurre in immagini questo scarto, questo vuoto di pathos e colore, è per lei una sfida artistica e personale.
«Tentare di mescolare l’emisfero interiore a quello esteriore – racconta – mi permette di continuare a leggere dentro di me un aspetto puro, incontaminato, che proviene dalla mia infanzia». Un’idea di cinema come atto di resistenza emotiva, capace di conservare l’autenticità dello sguardo originario.
I premi internazionali e il futuro della Trilogia
Katabasis ha ottenuto un ampio riconoscimento nei festival internazionali, confermando il valore della ricerca di Casella. Alla 81ª Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia ha conquistato il Premio Miglior Regista Emergente e il Premio Starlight – Regia Innovativa. Al New York International Cult Film Festival ha vinto il Best Narrative Feature, Best Actress e Best Cinematography – Outstanding Achievement Award, mentre ai London Movie Awards si è aggiudicato il premio come Best Experimental Feature Film e Miglior Attrice.
Nel frattempo, la regista è impegnata nella realizzazione del terzo e conclusivo capitolo della trilogia, La tenerezza del serpente. «È forse il mio film più violento e al tempo stesso più sentimentale», anticipa Casella. Un’opera che affronterà il tema dell’eterno ritorno attraverso un legame d’amore tra due donne, intrecciando dimensione materna e sessuale.
Con Katabasis, Samantha Casella conferma una visione cinematografica radicale, personale e profondamente emotiva, capace di dialogare con il pubblico internazionale senza rinunciare alla propria autenticità. Un cinema che non consola, ma scava.
